Teaching Notes for presenting :- THE LIFE OF MOSES

For this teaching of this part of the Overview of the bible we could split the bible into 3 parts:

1. Old Testament

2. Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

3. Acts and the rest of the New Testament. Even though Revelation is done as separate module.



Life of Moses - teaching notes that you can print out. When they are finished


1. 300 Years Between Joseph and Moses - Exodus 1:7-8
    The 300 year gap  between end of Genesis and the start of Exodus.
    Actually it is between Exodus verses 7 and verse 8

2. 1st 40 years of the life of Moses - Exodus 2:1-15
    The first 40 years of Moses life was very varied from a baby found in the Nile
    as a Hebrew. To being trained as a future Pharaoh.

3. Miriam Moses older sister - Exodus2:1-10
    The Birth of Moses
    The older sister of Moses who kept a sisterly eye on him while he was in the bull rushes.

4. Pharaoh the king of Egypt - Exodus 1:1-22
    From the time Joseph died to the time Moses took the people out of Egypt there were a number of Pharaohs or kings.

    Possibility Thutmose III 1, 1525BC- 1508BC was the Pharaoh of Egypt when Moses was born about
    1525BC and it was his daughter Hatshepsut who drew Moses out of the River Nile.

5. 2nd 40 years - Exodus 2:11-7-6
    During this time the King died Exodus 2:23

    The next 40 years in Moses Life.

    He lived as a shepherd in Midian beyond the Jordan, the Sinai peninsula and Arabia Petraea.

    Midian means contention.

6. God in the burning bush - Exodus 3:1-4:17
    God spoke to Moses out of a burning bush or or a bush that was on fire and did not burn.

7. Sandal - Moses was asked to... - Exodus 3:5-10
    God spoke to Moses to take off his sandals as it was holy ground.

8. 3rd 40 years starts - Exodus 7:8 - Deuteronomy 34:12

    the third set of 40 years start now.

9. The rod that turned into a snake - Aaron's rod that became a snake and back into a rod - Exodus7:8-13
    Aaron's rod became a snake and back to a rod under God's Command.

    Moses was eighty years old and Aaron was eighty three years old.

10. Ten Plagues - in Egypt - Exodus 7:14-11:10
TEN PLAGUES
After Aaron's staff became a snake in front of the Pharaoh there were ten Plagues:

1. The Plague of Blood 7:14-24
2. The Plague of Frogs 8:1-15
3. The Plague of Gants 8:16-19
4. The Plague of Flies 8:20-32
5. The Plague on the Livestock 9:17
6. The Plague of Boils 9:8-12
7. The Plague of Hail 9:13:35
8. The Plague of Locusts10:1-20
9. The Plague of Darkness 10:21-29
10. The Plague on the First Born 11:110

11. 1st Born die - if not covered by the.... - Exodus 11:1-10
    The Plague on the Firstborn

           The first born to die, which included people and livestock, was the last plague of the ten.

12. Passover - 1st Passover and it was in.... - Exodus 12:1-13:16
    Passover is the spring festival for Israel.

    this festival to commemorate the exodus from Egypt when the angel of
    death passed over the Hebrew people.

    held in the 14th of the month Abib the first month in the Jewish religious calendar.

    Passover - a passing over, the passover festival, Hebrew Pesach or Greek Pascha

13. Moses - the friend of God, Exodus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
    MOSES
    Background reading the books EXODUS, NUMBERS, DEUTERONOMY

    Moses is the main thread through out these four books and Gods dealing with him
    and the Hebrew people    using Moses as the go between.

    Moses name means "drawn out"

    Unlike his parents Moses is not obscure. He has parallels with Jesus.

    He was the leader and Law giver of Israel.

    Moses was adopted by Pharaohs daughter and being trained to future pharaoh of Egypt
    and was a great Egyptian General who won many battles.


14. Chariots - Egyptian army follows.... - Exodus 14:1-21
    The Egyptian army sank in the sand.


15. Miriam sings - Moses older sister - Exodus 15:1-21
    the older sister of Moses who rejoices in the demise of the Egyptian army.
    By composing the song of victory to God.


16. Cloud by day - Exodus13:20-22
    The pillar of cloud by day stayed with them until they crossed the river Jordan.
    The cloud was a symbol of divine guidance.


17. Pillar of Fire by night - - Exodus 13:21-22
    The pillar of fire by night stayed with them until they reached the promised land.
    ;The pillar of fire was a symbol of divine guidance.


18. Moses Crosses the Red Sea -Exodus 14:21-31
Crossing the Red Sea

Moses put his arm out at God's command and the waters parted.
Moses crossed approx 1445BC with over 3 million people.
When they were on dry land, water came back drowning the chasing Egyptian armies.

The Red Sea was divided and congealed or was frozen in place until God released the Sea again.

Where they crossed is an interesting point:

One commentator suggests it was across a 13km path in the Gulf of Akaba the western arm of the Red Sea so they could enter Midian (Arabia).

Mt Sinai, where Moses saw the burning bush, is also in Arabia.
Egypt at this time extended control all the way to the Gulf of Akaba with military strongholds.



19. Palm tree - water to drink - Exodus 15:22-27
    The Waters of Marah and Elim

    People or stock can notlast long with out water.

    Marah means "bitter."

    Elim means "palm trees."


    20. Manna - Exodus 16:1-36

    Gos sent Manna means in Hebrew means "What is it" and Quail from heaven.

    God sent down this food down from heaven to feed his people.

    Manna was a sweet gum or resin type of bread that God supernaturally sent from Heaven.

    Manna means what is it.


21. Hit Rock - told to hit the rock for water - Exodus 17:1-7
    Moses was told to hit the rock so water would come out of it to supply water to the people.
    Moses was obedient to God's commands.
    At a later time also involving rock and water he was not.


22. Mount Sinai - Moses goes to get.... - Exodus 19:1-25
    Moses went up to see God and got the Ten Commandments.

    Sinai means cliffs.

    Moses arrived at Mount Sinai three months after leaving Egypt.
    This day is known by these names the Feast of Weeks or Feast of Harvest. In Hebrew it is called Shavuot. In the New Testament the day is called Pentecost, which means the fiftieth day after Passover.
    The feast is in late spring.


23. Ten Commandments - First time - Exodus 20:1-17
    Moses went up Mount Sinai and got the the Ten Commandments on two tablets of Stone.

24. Three Feasts - the three main feasts in a Jewish year - Exodus 23:14-19
    Celebrate these three annual feasts to the Lord your God -

    1. Feast of Unleavened Bread or Passover. Hebrew Pesach or Greek Pascha.
    2. Feast of Harvest or Pentecost. Hebrew Shavuot.
    3. Feast of Ingathering or Feast of Booths or tabernacles. Hebrew Succot or Sukkot.


25. Passover - feast of Passover - Numbers 28:16-31
    Passover starts the Jewish religious calendar.

    Passover refers back to when God said to Moses about the last of the Ten Plagues.
    That he would kill the first born of any one who did not have lamb's blood on the door of their house.

    Passover was the day the Hebrews left Egypt.

26. The Feast of Pentecost - - Numbers 28:26-31
    Feast of Weeks

    FEAST OF WEEKS OR PENTECOST
    Late spring 7 weeks after Passover and the ingathering of the first harvest eg Wheat.

    According to oral tradition, Feast of Weeks was the time of giving of the Law at Mount Sinai.

    Feast of Weeks or Shavuot in New Testament is called Pentecost coming 50 days after Passover.


27. The Feast of Trumpets - - Numbers 29:1-40
Feast of Trumpets Day of Atonement Feast of Tabernacles
    TRUMPETS
    The Feast of Trumpets also called Rosh Hashanah or the Head of the Year.
    Starts a period of these three feasts over a period of 15 days.

    1. Trumpets - Trumpets blown to prepare for the Day of Atonement.

    2. Ten days later Day of Atonement also called Yom Kippur.

    3. Five days later Feast of booths also called Tabernacles or Succot or
    Sukkot the festival of final Autumn harvest.


28. Golden Calf - - Exodus 32:1-35
    The Golden Calf

    THE GOLDEN CALF
    Aaron made the golden calf at Israel's request when thy rebelled against God.
    God had said do not make molten idols.

    In Egypt people made molten idols to worship so the people asked Aaron to make one.

29. Moses - - Exodus 34:1-35
    The New Stone Tablets
    MOSES goes up the mountain a second time to get a replacement set of the Ten Commandments.
    He broke the first set in anger because the Hebrew people sinned.


30. First five - laws or the ten commandments - Exodus 20:1-11
    1st five of the Ten Commandments


31. Second five - laws or the ten commandments - Exodus 20:13-17
    Last Five of the Ten Commandments
    2nd five of the ten commandments



32. High Priest - Exodus 39:1-31
    The Priestly Garments
    The high priest were told to do certain jobs and wear particular clothes.


33. Tabernacles - the 2nd feast - Exodus 39:32-40:38
    Moses Inspects the Tabernacle

    The place were the people of God worshiped God.


34. Aaron - Numbers 12:1-16
    Miriam and Aaron Oppose Moses

35. 12 spies- Numbers 13:1-33
    Exploring Canaan by 12 spies

    Moses sent out 12 spies one from each tribe.


36.37 Years - in the wilderness why?... - Numbers14:33-34
    The forty years started before the 10 plagues when Aaron was 83 and Moses was 80 Exodus 7:6-7
    The people of God wander around the desert because of their disobedience.

37. The Budding of Aaron's Staff - Numbers 17:1-13
    Israelites constant grumbling against Moses. God said get me twelve staffs.


38. Speak to the Rock - instead of hitting it - Numbers 20 :2-13
    Water From the Rock

    Speak to the rock give water do not hit the rock
    God asked Moses to speak to the rock.
    Instead Moses hit the rock twice for water because he was angry and this was the reason
    he was bared from the promised land by God.

    This happened at Meribah which means Strife, contention.

    Moses death Deuteronomy 34


40. Snakes - because of sin - Numbers 21:4-9
    The Bronze Snake

    GOD sends snakes to punish the people who had sinned.
    Then says to Moses to make a Bronze snake and if the people look at it they will live.


41. Balaam - wrongs God's people - Numbers 22:25-16


42. 6 Cities - of refuge - Numbers 35:9-15

45. Caleb - Numbers 14:26-35
    p>Caleb [Hebrew bold impetuous] the son of Jephunneh. One of the 12 spies and a leader of Israel after Joshua.

    Caleb was Courageous, Consecrated to god, Vigorous and faithful in old age and Invincible because he drove out the giants from his inheritance.

    Was given the land promised to him by Joshua the land of the Anakims, Kirjatharba or Hebron and the neighboring hill country.

    A prince of Judah as the leader of the Hezronites.
    While Nahshon was the prince of the whole tribe of Judah.


46. Joshua - after Moses died, God's man was Joshua - Joshua 5:13-6:21
    The Fall of Jericho

    Joshua 1405BC- 1390BC, leads the people of Israel into the promised land. Conquest took about 7 years.

    Joshua or Jehoshua or Oshea successor of Moses [Hebrew Jehovah is salvation,] "A soldier of the Lord"

    Joshua was one of the only two men who entered the promised Land.
    He was obedient, consecrated with spiritual mindedness and Godly reverence to the Lord God.

    Joshua died at 110 years old.
