Teaching Notes for presenting:- Judges and Three Kings

For The teaching of this part of the Overview of the Bible, we could split it into 3 parts:

1. Old Testament

2. Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

3. Acts and the rest of the New Testament. Even though Revelation is done as other module.


 

Judges and Three Kings - teaching notes you can print out. When they are finished.



   
1. Joshua - After Moses God's man was Joshua  Joshua 5:13-6:21
      Joshua lead God's people in the promised land between 1405BC- 1390BC eg last 15 years of his life.
      Conquest of the promised land took about 7 years.

      Joshua in Hebrew means Jehovah is salvation
Joshua was a soldier of the Lord sometimes named Jehoshua or Oshea he was the successor of Moses.
      Joshua was one of the only two men who entered the promised Land. He was to obedient, consecrated
      with spiritual mindedness and Godly reverence to the Lord God.
      Joshua died at 110 years old 1390?BC born about 1500BC about 25 years after Moses.

      The descendants of Abraham are given  possession of the land according to God's promise.

      Characteristics of Joshua:
      Faith
      Spiritual mindedness
      Godly reverence
      Obedience
      Decision


2. Caleb - Caleb a friend of Joshua Numbers 14:26-35
      Caleb Joshua's right hand man and was 85 years old when he entered the promised land.

     Caleb from the tribe of Judah was a leader of Israel after the death of Joshua.

     Caleb Hebrews name means bold, impetuous.

      Caleb in Hebrew means a dog the son of Jephunneh. One of the 12 spies and a leader of Israel after Joshua.

     Caleb was Courageous, Consecrated to god, Vigorous and faithful in old age and
      Invincible because he drove out the giants from his inheritance.


3. Spy - Joshua's eyes Joshua 2:1-24 and 6:22-25
    One of the two spies Joshua sent into the promised land.

    Who were looked after by Rahab and brought back good report to Joshua.

    No names are given to the two spies Joshua used.


4. Rahab - Rahab Saved Joshua 2:1-24 & 6:22-25

     Put a scarlet cord out of her window which was on the side of the cities wall.

     Rahab later married Salmon (Sala) a cousin of
     Caleb, both men were from the tribe of
     Judah and was the great great grand mother of King David.

     Rahab name means large and may be based on the poetic and symbolic name for Egypt.


5. Jericho Falls - Joshua takes Jericho   Joshua 6:16-27

     The Fall of Jericho. The battle happened about 1405BC.
     The first city captured by Israel under Joshua.

     Called the city of the palms.


6. Ai Burns - Joshua takes Ai   Joshua 8:1-28

     AI destroyed and burnt
     The battle happened about 1405BC
     The second city taken by Joshua.

    AI means the heap or the ruin.


7. 1st Judge Othhniel - 1st Judge of Israel   Judges 3:7-11
     Judged Israel for 40 years. First of eighteen Judges.

     Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb.
     Marries Caleb's daughter by wining a battle.

     Othniel in Hebrew means lion of God.


8. 4th Judge Deborah - 4th Judge and only woman judge of Israel   Judges 4:1-5:31
     The only woman Judge or Ruler of Israel.
     Also a prophetess.

     Deborah in Hebrew means bee, wasp.


9. 5th Judge Barak - Barak 5th Judge of Israel   Judges 4-5

     Called Barak (lighting) to fight a war against Jabin king of Canaan.
     Barak was from the tribe of Naptali.
     The Son of Abinoan a Midianites and 5th Judge of Israel along side Deborah 1237BC-1198BC

10. 6th Judge Gideon - Gideon the 6th Judge  Judges 6:1-8:35
      6th Judge of Israel 1191BC-1151BC 40 years.

      Gideon (JERUBBUL-let baal contend) of Manasseh.
      Faiths miraculous victory
      Son of Joash ( Great warrior)

      Gideon had 70 sons and many wives.

      Called a mighty man of valor
      Characteristics of:
      Humility
      Caution
      Spirituality
      Divine inspiration
      Divine Fellowship
      Strategy
      Tact
      Loyalty to God
      Weakened by prosperity


11. 7th Judge Abimelech - 7th Judge of Israel   Judges 9:1-56
       Son of Gideon by a concubine in Shechem.
       Rules for three years 1151BC-1149BC a evil ruler by God's standards.

       Abimelech in Hebrew means Father of the King.

       This Abimelech is not the same Abimelech
       which was the king of Gerar in Genesis 20:1-18.


12. Naomi - Mother-in-law of Ruth  Ruth 1:1-8
      Naomi and her husband Elimelech and their two sons Mahlon and Chilion left Israel because of a famine.
      Naomi and her family were in Moab for over ten years.

      Naomi in Hebrew means Pleasant.


13. 9th Judge Jair - 9th Judge of Israel  Judges 10:3-5
      Jair a Gileadite was Israel's Judge or ruler.
      Judges for twenty two years. 1126-1104

      Jair in Hebrew means Jah enlightens.

      In this period Boaz marries Ruth. about 1120BC


14. Ruth - Ruth Ruth  12:1:16-13:1
       The great grand mother of King David from whose family tree came Jesus.

       Boaz married Ruth the Moabites about 1120BC which was in the time of the Jair Judge.

       Ruth in Hebrew means friendship.

       Boazin Hebrew means fleetness, strength.

      Their son Obed was the father of Jesse who was the father of King David.


15. Sandal - Boaz buys Naomi's land Ruth 4:7-9
        The removal of the sandal was a symbol of the transaction having taken place.
      The Kinsman redeemer took off his sandal as a sign the deal was finished and Boaz could marry Ruth.

      Boaz from the Town of Bethlehem and from the tribe of Judah and his name means strength, fleetness.


16. Jepthah - 10th Judge of Israel Judges 11:1-12:7
      10th Judge of Israel when their rulers were called Judges.
      1087-1081 Judged for 6 years.
      He delivered Israel from the Ammonites.

     Jephthah in Hebrew means opposer.

      Summary of his life:
      Son of a Gilead an outcast, rises to leadership, moved at times by God's spirit, made a rash vow,
      Delivered Israel from their enemies, a man who kept his vow.


17. Elon - 12th Judge Elon - Judges 12:8-15 The Zebulunite who judged Israel for ten years 1073BC-1063BC.
Elon in Hebrew means oak or strong.


18. 14th Judge Eli - 14th Judge of Israel and a High Priest 1st Samuel 1:1-4:22
      Judged from 1107 to 1067 so lead Israel for 40 years.
      Eli trained Samuel from a very early age.

      Eli in Hebrew means Jah is high.


19. Samuel born - Samuel born 1105BC 1st Samuel 1:1-2:11
      Son of Elkanah and Hannah from the tribe of Levite.

      Born to the answer of Hannah's prayers.


20. Samson - The strongest man in the Bible Judges 13:1-16:31
      Samson in Hebrew Distinguished, strong tribe-Dan the strongest man in the Bible also was Israel's 15th Judge.
      Judged Israel for 20 years, 1069BC-1049BC, read Judges chapters13 to 17.

      Had Lady friend Delilah whose name means languishing-trouble.

      Removed South west gates of Gaza,
      pushed out the pillars of house of Dagaon killed those there and himself.
      Kept breaking God's promises so kept on paying the price.
      Samson had a life of contrasts: Separated as a Nazarite - yet tampering with evil associations,
      spiritual at times, yet under the power of carnal appetites, childish in his plans, yet courageous in battle,
      mighty in physical strength yet weak in resisting temptation had a sad end.


21. Delilah - One of Samson's wives Judges 16:1-31
      A philistine from the valley of Sorek.
      One persistent lady to find were Samson's strength was.

      One of Samson's foreign wives eg not from one of the tribes of Israel.

      Delilah's name means languishing.


22. 16th Judge Samuel - Anoints Saul as King 1 Samuel 12:1-13:1
      Samuel was asked by God to anoint Saul and later David as Kings of Israel.

      At this time Samuel was the 16th Judge of Israel and a prophet of Israel.
      1067-1020 leadership of 47 years. Started when he was 38 years old.

      Hebrew name of Samuel means heard of God.


23. King Saul - reigns as king for 40 years. 1st of 3 kings 1 Samuel 11:1-11

      reigned for 40 years between 1043BC-1011BC.
      from the tribe of Benjamite the first King of Israel.

      Saul in Hebrew means asked for.


24. Samuel - a judge and prophet 1st Samuel 16:1-13

      Anointed the first two kings of Israel under God's orders. This time he is asked to anoint
      David to be King 1 Samuel 16:13. David was still a youth when Samuel anointed.
      David to be King in the town of Bethlehem.

      Hebrew name of Samuel means Heard of God.


25. David with his harp - plays and sings for King Saul 1 Samuel 16:14-23

      David's playing on his Harp was the only thing that would settle Saul's troubled mind.
      David was accomplished musician he practiced while looking after his fathers sheep.


26. Goliath - the man David kills 1 Samuel 17:1-58

      a professional soldier of great height who fought against Israel.
      A Giant from Gath a Royal Philistine city.


27. David with his sling - kills Goliath  1 Samuel 17:40-58
      David uses his sling and a stone to kill Goliath.
      He had used them to protect his fathers sheep
      and knew what he could do with them under God's guidance.


28. Saul tries to spear David - Tries to kill his servant David  1 Samuel 18:5-15
      King Saul tries to kill David in a fit of anger because of jealousy with a spear.


29. Johnathan - Jonathan David's friend  1 Samuel 20:1-42

      Jonathan a true friend to David.
      Jonathan David's friend and King Saul's son.

       Hebrew name of Jonathan means Jah is given.


30. Soldiers - David mighty men  1 Samuel 23:8-39

      David's soldiers followed him every were.
      obedience is crucial to a soldier.


31. 40 years - 40 years reign of King Saul  1 Samuel 31:1-13
      King Saul reigned for about thirty two years. Saul Takes His Life
      32 year reign of King Saul
      In which time he went from being a Good King to a bad King.

      1043BC - 1011BC

      Hebrew Name for Saul means asked.


32. David as king - 2nd of 3 kings  2 Samuel 5:1-5 1011BC- 971BC
      David Becomes King Over Israel
      David Becomes King
      David had become King in God's time and reigned for forty years between 1011BC-971BC

      Hebrew name of David means beloved.

      David was Good in God's sight.

      David had a whole heart towards God.


33. David takes Jerusalem - Captures the city  2nd Samuel 5:6-15 1004Bc Approximately
      David Conquers Jerusalem
      David as king takes Jerusalem and makes it his new capital.
      This happened about 1004BC.


34. Ark taken back to Jerusalem - is brought home  2nd Samuel 6:1-23 1004Bc Approximately
      King David moved The Ark to Jerusalem.

      The ark was where God's presence was.


35. David and Bathsheba - and king David got it wrong  2nd Samuel 11:1-12-31

    King David murders Uriah the Hittite, a faithful subject and soldier to cover his tracks.
    Uriah was the husband of Bathsheba.;
    Name of Bathsheba means daughter of an Oak.;


36. Ammon and Tamar - is raped by a half brother  2nd Samuel 13:1-38

      Tamar is seduced by her half brother Amnon then raped and then rejected.

      Hebrew meaning of Tamar is palm.

      Hebrew meaning of Amnon is tutelage or up-bringing.
      He was the eldest son of David, by Abinoam, and slain by Absalom Tamar's bother.


37. 40 years - 2nd King also reigns for 40 years  1 Kings 2:10 971BC

      The end of King Davids 40 year Reign.
      2nd King of the 3 kings of the unified kingdom. He reigned for 40 years.1011BC-971BC

      David who had becomes King in God's time died.

      Lived until he was 70 years and 6 months old, started his reign at 30 years old.

      Hebrew name of David means beloved.

      David was Good in God's sight. David had a whole heart towards God

38. Solomon - son of King David  1st Kings 2:13-46 971BC-931BC
      Solomon's Throne Established
      Solomon had half a heart after God unlike his father David who had a whole heart after God.
      Born 999BC reigned 40 years 971-931 must have been about 28 when he started his reign.
      Hebrew name for Solomon means peace.


39. Sword - is used to solve a problem  1st Kings 3:16-18

      A Wise Ruling
      Solomon uses a sword to get the truth out of two women.
      Were two women claiming that the same baby was theirs.


40. Temple - SOLOMON'S TEMPLE  1st Kings 6:1-38 966BC-959BC
      Solomon Builds the Temple
      Built by King Solomon from material supplied by his father King David.
      The plans were also given to King David by God.

      The Temple was started in 966 in Solomon's fourth year of his reign and completed seven years later.


41. Queen of Sheba - visits King Solomon  1st Kings 10:1-13
      visits King Solomon and she is impressed with his wisdom and wealth.

      The Queen of Sheba asked King Solomon a lot of Questions to see what she had heard was true.

      The name Sheba means seven or a oath.

42. 40 years - 3rd king of 3 kings also rules 40 years &nbs;1st Kings 2:-12-11:42 and 1 Chronicles 1:1-9:31 931BC
      End of the 40 Year Reign of King Solomon and his death
     
      The end of king Solomon's reign the Kingdom is split into two Kingdoms see Prophets and Divided Kingdom

      Has only half a heart after God and is lead away from God by his actions.
