The Early Church Part Two Or Acts Part 2

For the teaching of this part of the Overview of the Bible, we could split it into 3 parts:

1. Old Testament

2. Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

3. Acts and the rest of the New Testament. Even though Revelation is done as another module.

1. Now AD53 - Acts 15:36-40
  Next 43 Years Of The Book Of Acts, Acts 15:36-40

It is now AD53, and we cover the next 43 YEARS of The Early Church.

After a 7 months' rest, Paul started out again on the third missionary trip, which was to take him and his companions 4 years to complete. In pictures 2 to 7 we will cover the next 4 years.

The book of ACTS was written by Luke as History and covers 33 years. Luke wrote Acts about AD68. This covers the period from Ad33 to AD62 of the early church history.

 

2. 4 years trip - Acts 15:40-21:18
Next 4 Years Of The Book Of Acts, Acts 15:40-21:18

Paul's third missionary trip lasted 4 years. Which covers Acts 15:40 to 21-18. During this time Paul wrote a number of letters to churches he had visited. Including Galatians, Thessalonians, Corinthians and Romans.

4 years is a long time for a missionary trip.


3. Books burn - Acts 19:1-20
Burning Of Books or scrolls Paul Is In Ephesus, Acts 19:1-20

Those who practiced sorcery burnt their books. Because they wanted to get their lives right with God.

They had no need for things from their old life. Because to hold on to them would trip them up in their new life style.


4. Mirror - 1 Corinthians 12:1-13:133

Paul talks about seeing God as a reflection but we eventually will see Him face to face.

Mirrors were made out of polished brass.

1st Corinthians was written by Paul in Ephesus May 56AD as his 4th letter.


5. Satan - 2nd Corinthians 2:5-11

Satan as an Angel of Light

Paul says that Satan is out to destroy the brethren in Christ anyway he can.

Satan also comes in other guises: like a roaring lion, a thief, an accuser of the brethren.

2nd Corinthians was written by Paul from Macedonia Sept - Oct AD56 as his 5th letter.


6. Romans - the book of Romans
Paul writes the book of Romans, Romans 1:1-16:27

Romans was written by Paul from Corinth December - February 56-57AD as his 6th letter and 7th New Testament book written.


7. Idol - Acts
Idol Or The Golden Calf, Acts

Paul was writing to new Christians living in a non Christian world.

It was common to make graven images or idols.

Paul may also been thinking of the time when Aaron made the golden calf at Israel's request when they rebelled against God. God had said do not make molten idols.

In Egypt people made molten idols to worship. So the people asked Aaron to make one.

Romans was written approximately 57AD and was Paul's 6th letter.

Paul from Corinth December - February 56-57AD. As his 6th letter and 7th New Testament book.


8. Paul in Chains - Acts 27:1-2

58AD - Acts 27:1-2

Paul was in prison in Caesarea and in chains for two years. The last trial was in front of King Herod Agrippa 2nd a great grand son of King Herod the Great.

Luke, the writer of the book of Acts, went with Paul to Rome.

Chains stopped prisoners running away.


9. 1st trial - Acts 22:30-23:11
      FIRST OF SEVERAL TRIALS About June 3rd 57AD - Acts 22:30-23:11

Paul's first trial was in front of the Sanhedrin.
Paul was a ex pharisee and a member of the Jewish council called the Sanhedrin.

Remember that Paul's background is that of first century Rabbinical Jew.


10. High Priest Ananias - Acts 23:1-23

57AD - Acts 23:2 and 24:1

The high priest was the elected leader of the Jewish religious people. He was also the president of the Jewish council called "The Sanhedrin".

Ananias means "Jah is gracious."


11. 2nd Trial - Acts 24:1-23
      2ND TRIAL IN FRONT OF FELIX Thursday 9th June 57AD - Acts 24:1-23 Felix was the Roman Governor or Procurator of Judea. Caesarea was his political capital, and it was also a seaport. The area was under Roman rule. Nero was the ruling Caesar in Rome.
      

12. Paul's 3rd Trial - Acts 24:21-23
Third Trial, Again Before Felix For Paul, Acts 24:21-23

June 57 AD - Acts 24:27

The 2nd time, under His Excellency Governor Felix.

It was a Roman Policy not to leave untried prisoners for your successor.


13. Paul's 4th Trial - Acts 25:1-12
Fourth Trial, Before Festus For Paul, Acts 25:1-12

July 59AD - Acts 25:1-12

In front of His Excellency Governor Porcius Fetus a Roman. Paul faces his 4th trial over what he believes.

At least Paul was still alive.


14. King Agrippa the 2nd - Acts 25:13-26:32
       KING AGRIPPA 2nd 58AD - Acts 25:13-26:32 King Herod Agrippa the second, was the trial judge to whom Paul appealed to "as a Roman citizen I want to be tried in front of Caesar". King Agrippa 2nd was of the line of Herod the Great. Herod the Great was the father of Atistobulus, Atistobulus was the father of Herod Agrippa 1st. Herod Agrippa 1st was the father of King Herod Agrippa 2nd who is the great-grandson of Herod the Great. KING AGRIPPA 2nd Agrippa means One causing pain. He died in 100AD.


15. Paul's 5th Trial - Acts 25:23-26:32

King Herod Agrippa 2nd reigned from 49 to 92AD. And was a great grandson of Herod the Great.

At this stage Paul had been in prison over two years.

Paul while in prison was able to talk about Jesus to those around him. Maybe he would not have spoken to them if he had not been in prison.

King Agrippa 11 was the King at this time.


16. Paul still in chains - Acts 27:1-2
      PAUL STILL IN CHAINS 58AD - Acts 27:1-2
Paul was in prison in Caesarea and in chains for two years.
The last trail was in front of King Herod Agrippa 2nd a great grand son of King Herod the Great.

Luke, the writer of the book of Acts, went with Paul to Rome.

      Chains stopped prisoners running away.

      August 59 - February 60AD

      Paul's trip as a prisoner is shown in this map [a map of the Mediterranean].
      After the Fast eg the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) September-October late Autumn.
      Equinox 21st September and the associated storm winds that come at this time.


18. Snake attacks Paul - Acts 28:1-10
Paul and the Snake ashore on Malta, Acts 28:1-10

Oct 59AD - Feb 60AD - Acts 28:1-10

Paul is made welcome in Malta.

A snake attacks him, but he suffers no ill effects. Even a poisonous snake could not stop Paul getting to Rome.

He heals the father of a high official and cures the ills of all the sick islanders and spends the winter with them.


19. Paul - under house arrest
   Paul under house arrest - Rome February 60AD - March 62AD, (1st Roman imprisonment) Acts 28:17-31 Paul now prisoner in Rome was put under house arrest. Later he could move about, but then was arrested again 67-68AD and put to death, but that event is still 5 to 8 years away.

Acts part one   and Acts part two  timespan the years from 33AD to 62AD.
The book of Acts was written by Luke in 67-68AD.
The book of Acts is the 21st book written in the New Testament.


20. Gospel - Gospel Of Luke - Luke 1:1-24:53
Gospel Of Luke, Luke 1:1-24:53

The Gospel of Luke is about what Jesus did and taught. And it was written by Luke about 61AD.

Luke was the only writer that was not an eye witness. Luke a Greek, was a fully trained medical Doctor and used the Greek way of researching and compiling the story of Jesus life.


21. Soldier - The Armour Of God - Ephesians 6:10-18

Paul wrote Ephesians in Rome in 60AD.

An appeal to be strong, and, with the assistance of the Spirit, to fight the power of evil.

Ephesians the 7th letter by Paul and the 9th New Testament Book was written in 60AD.


22. Comeback - Philemon 1:1-25
Comeback, Paul's Plea For Onesiumus, Philemon 1:1-25

Paul wrote the book of Philemon about 61AD.

Paul may have been about 50-60 years old a great old age for those times.

PHILEMON the 9th letter by Paul and the 11th New Testament Book and was written in 61AD.


23. Take a Letter - Colossians 4:7-10

61AD

Paul who was under house arrest in Rome wrote a letter we call today Colossians. The letter was delivered by a messenger which was the custom in those days.

24. Run the race - Philippians 3:12-4:1

62AD

One of the themes in Philippians run the race for the Goal which is Jesus Christ.

PHILIPPIANS The 10th book by Paul and the 12th New Testament Book was written in 62AD.

Paul's 5th Trip?

Paul may have done a 5th trip between 1st time in jail and his 2nd time in jail where he was to die.

This missionary journey of Paul happened after Luke written his letter to Theopilus,
This letter was to become known as the Book of Acts.

Paul possibly went to Spain and back doing his time in House arrest in Rome before his recall and death.


26. Rome burns - 19th July 64AD

Rome was burnt by fire 19th July 64AD

Nero (black) was the ruling Caesar.

After the finish of Acts

July 19th 64AD it was high summer.

27. Kiss of love - 1 Peter
      KISS OF LOVE 64AD - 1 Peter Jewish way of greetings close friends was to hug and kiss them on the side of the face. Many Mediterranean countries still use this form of greeting even today for close friends and family. 1st Peter the 14th New testament book which was written by the apostle Peter in 64AD remember the kiss of betrayal by Judas of Jesus in the Easter story.


28. Scribe - Paul's Letter To Titus, Titus 1::-3:15

Paul uses a scribe to dictate a letter to his friend Titus, about June -September 67AD.

For whatever reason Paul found it hard to write, may be his age approx 50 years old, a good old age for those times. Also, remember that his life had been hard, damaged hands or poor eye sight, or a combinations of ills or age. Paul used to dictate to a scribe all his letters, as it was the done thing in those times.

Many people could not read or write. Even the learned people never learned to write.


29. 2nd Timothy - The book was written by Paul about 67AD

As a letter to a young pastor called Timothy.

Paul's 13th letter and possibility his last unless we ascribe Hebrews to him as well.


30. The Victors Crown - 2nd Timothy 2:1-12

Paul wrote in his letter to Timothy, my beloved son. How to be a victor in Jesus.

From Rome September-November 67AD

31. Hebrews - the book of Hebrews
  • The Book was written about 67AD.
  • This book was written to Hebrew Christians in Rome.
  • This book may have been written by Paul.
  • This book has the famous faith chapter that tells of the Hebrew saints of faith.

  • 32. Moses - Hebrews chapter 11
        MOSES The book of Hebrews was written about 67AD. It contains the "faith chapter" Hebrews chapter 11 - One of the people talked about because of his faith, is Moses. MOSES 1525BC- 1404BC, Red Sea 1445, Tabernacle 1444



    33. Red Sea - Hebrews chapter 11
          RED SEA The event of crossing of the Red Sea is history. Where they crossed is a interesting point:
    One commentator suggests it was across a 13km path in the Gulf of Akaba.
    An arm of the Red Sea so they could enter Midian (Arabia) and Mt Sinai.
    This commentator claims Mt Sinai is in Arabia and is where Moses saw the burning bush.
         


    34. Paul back in jail again - 67AD-68AD

    After the book of Acts had been finished, Paul was still alive. Some say he went on a 5th Trip to Spain, but that is as may be. He lived on for a number of years and was finally put back into prison and put to death about 67-78AD.

    Paul died in Jail about Autumn 67- spring 68

    He could have been  sixty years or older.

    and wrote 2 Timothy 67AD

    Possibility also Hebrews 67AD


    35. Jerusalem - is destroyed
          JERUSALEM IS DESTROYED 2ND SEPTEMBER 70AD

          The Temple of Jerusalem was destroyed by the Tenth Legion of the Roman Army.
          Under the command of Titus the son of Vespasian about 2nd September 70AD.
          When Vespasian (69AD- 79AD) was the Caesar or Emperor in Rome.

          The Romans captured Masada in 73AD.

          Romans were now in control again.


    36. John - on the Island of Patmos - Revelation 1:1-20

    About 95AD

    John was imprisoned on the Island of Patmos because of his faith in Jesus.

    THE BOOK OF REVELATION is the 27th book of the New Testament and the last book of the bible.


    37. Eight Characteristics of Jesus - Revelation 1:9-20

      Eight-fold description of Jesus

    • 1.His body,
    • 2.His Hair,
    • 3.His Eyes,
    • 4.His Feet,
    • 5.His Voice,
    • 6.His Right Hand,
    • 7.His Mouth,
    • 8.His Countenance.

    Son of Man is one of the 34 tiles given to Jesus in the book of Revelation.

    What does each description of the body depict? eg body, hair etc.

    Jesus is the son of God.


    38. Holy City - Revelation 21:1-21
    The Holy City The New Jerusalem. Revelation 21:1-21

    Jerusalem.



    39. Jesus Reigns - Revelation 22:1-21

    Jesus reigns forever and so do his servants.

    Jesus is in control again.

          THE END

          This is the second part of a two part "THE EARLY CHURCH SERIES"
          First part covered from 53AD to 96AD, a total of 43 years.
          Both parts cover 33AD to 96AD, a period of 63 years.
          Now the church of God is still alive and well.
